Homemade kitten formula recipes
If you suddenly find yourself needing to feed kittens late at night or on a weekend when you can’t go to the store, an easy kitten milk recipe is a must.
The following recipes are intended as emergency kitten formula replacements. They use ingredients that you may already have in your kitchen and will help get you by until you can purchase kitten formula.

According to Ingham County, Michigan, you can make a simple formula in a number of different ways.
If you’re taking care of an orphaned feline, human formula isn’t the best food for her. You should stick with a kitten milk replacement to ensure her long-term health, but in a pinch, human baby formula may tide you over until you can make it to the pet store.

Feeding Orphaned Kittens
The most appropriate food for a newborn kitten is her mother’s milk, but if she’s been abandoned, that might not be available as an option. If you have to act as a surrogate mommy to a tiny feline, you should choose a commercially available feline milk replacer.
Only a properly formulated milk replacer can ensure your little friend gets the proper vitamins, minerals, fats and proteins she needs in the correct amounts. Human formulas are created to fill the needs of human infants, and the ratio of nutrients is different from a kitten’s needs.
Human Formula for Emergency Use
In an emergency, you may be able to use powdered or concentrated human baby formula to sustain an orphaned kitten until you can get some regular feline milk replacer.
However, you need to ignore the directions on the package. Instead, make up the formula at twice the strength indicated for human babies. Alternately, you can make a temporary formula using one can of evaporated milk, one egg yolk and two tablespoons of Karo syrup.
After about three to four weeks of age, your kitten can start eating solid foods. However, even after she has weaned, your kitten should still not consume human baby formula, even as a treat.
Because human baby formula is made from cow’s milk, it is high in lactose.
While a newborn kitten can digest lactose, which is also found in a mother cat’s milk, kittens lose that ability shortly after they are weaned. For this reason, a kitten or cat should also not be given cow’s milk.
Human formula can be dangerous for medically fragile kittens. They can cause diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration. In a kitten who is already weak, dehydration can be potentially fatal.
If you have to give your kitten human formula for any reason, choose one that is iron-free to avoid an overdose of iron. A goat’s milk-based formula may be more easily digested than one made from cow’s milk.

FORMULA NUMBER 3
Just mix together 1 part boiled water to 5 parts evaporated milk, then add half a teaspoon of bone meal per every 16 ounces of fluid that you mix.
All three of these recipes should be thoroughly mixed together. Store them in a tightly sealed container in the fridge. When it’s time to feed the kittens, combine half of the mixture with an equal amount of boiling water.
The mixture should be just above room temperature when you feed it. Always make sure to test the mixture on your hand before feeding it to the kittens.
FORMULA NUMBER 4
I found a new recipe for kitten formula for newborn and very young kittens that don’t have a mother. It is from Best Friends magazine the May/June 2009 edition. It is about the Best Friends Sanctuary and it is a great formula for kittens:
- 3 egg yolks (no whites)
- 3 oz. water
- 3 ounces goat milk from store
- 4 oz. plain full fat yogurt
Mix well and refrigerate until ready to use. A kitten should eat 7 -15 CC’s per feeding.
Warm by placing a bottle of the mixture in a bowl of hot water.
FORMULA NUMBER 5
In a mixing bowl, mix:
- one half cup of evaporated milk,
- 1 teaspoons of mayonnaise, or an egg yolk,
- a drop or two of infant vitamins,
- a little squirt of Karo syrup the white kind
If they are dehydrated, I will use homemade pedialyte, which is easily found on the net, and mix it in with this, just a little bit or offer in in a small bowl while they are eating.
This really seems to help them grow, I had to hand bottle feed seven of them last month and they really enjoyed this so much. I would put them all in the bathtub on a towel for meals and it was so cute.
They just loved lapping it up from the saucers and I would tell the parents who adopted them to supplement their meals with meat baby food and this from time to time
FORMULA NUMBER 6
- 1 quart whole goat’s milk
- 1 teaspoon light Karo syrup
- 1 tablespoon nonfat plain yogurt (made with goat’s milk preferably)
- 1 egg yolk
- Unflavored gelatin
- Newborn to 1 week — 1 package gelatin
- 2nd week — 1-1/2 to 2 packages gelatin
- 3rd week — 2-1/2 to 3 packages gelatin
- 4th week — 4 packages gelatin
Put the goat’s milk in a saucepan and add the proper amount of gelatin based on the kitten’s age. Heat the mixture just until the gelatin is dissolved and then remove it from the heat. Mix in the remaining ingredients and refrigerate. It will keep up to one week in the refrigerator.
FORMULA NUMBER 7
- 8 ounces homogenized whole milk
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon salad oil
- 1 drop liquid pediatric vitamins (optional)
Mix well and keep refrigerated.
FORMULA NUMBER 8
- 1 part boiled water to 5 parts evaporated milk
- 1/2 teaspoon bone meal per 16 ounces fluid
Mix well and keep refrigerated.
FORMULA NUMBER 9
- 1 can evaporated milk
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 tablespoons corn syrup
- 1 drop liquid human pediatric vitamins (optional)
Mix the milk, egg yolk, and syrup well and store it in a tightly sealed jar in the refrigerator. At feeding time, mix half of the estimated feeding amount with an equal amount of boiling water. Once a day, mix one drop of the human infant liquid vitamins in each kitten’s formula portion.
